Shade looked around the large training room as he shucked off his black jacket. He draped it over a rock beside the door and smiled. He closed his yellow eyes and freed his large black wings. He ruffled them as he felt the small air currents brush through his feathers.
He took a few steps forwards, flapping his wings as he did so. In moments he was flying above the ground in the training room, glad for the chance to free his wings.

Anger swelled inside the girl's belly, making her feel hot. She stormed through the hallways of the Hideout, her brows furrowed and her lip curled slightly over her teeth.
"I'll kill him..." She muttered under her breath. Someone had told her that Shade would be practicing in the training room. The second she found him, River was going to ring his good-for-nothing neck. Slamming the door to the room open, River stormed in, her eyes searching for the truant.
"Shade!" She nearly screamed at him, "Get your ass down here now!"

Shade felt at peace, with the air flowing through his feathers, at least he did until someone yelling ruined his peace. The yelling shocked him and he turned a bit too sharply, hitting his wing off the wall. He muttered a curse at the pain that shot through his wing. He looked down and noticed River and gulped. He slowly descened landing a few feet away. He gingerly folded his wings to his back, wincing as his wing pulsed with pain. This can't be good he thought to himself, looking at his girlfriend's sister. "Hello River" he said, a nervous smile on his face.

River's hands gravitated towards her hips, but she figured that would look like a scolding mother. So instead she opted to cross them over her chest, making it clear that she was upset but coming across in a way that didn't appear too silly. When Shade landed, River scowled at him.
"I heard from several mutants that you were making out with my sister in the game room a few days ago," she said coldly, her eyes narrowing into slits. "Explain." She said, and the air shimmered around her in a way that looked more foreboding than pretty.

Shade kept his hands at his side, resisting the urge to fidget under her intense gaze. He thought about what to say, hus mouth opening and closing several times before he finally decided what to say. "I didn't know that kissing someones cheek was considered making out" he replied.

River felt her anger escalating. She wished she could punch his face in.
"Don't get smart with me, pretty boy," she snapped. "You have yet to explain yourself!" Her hands flew down to her sides and a loud crash echoed from behind her, where part of the door had fallen over after she'd rearranged the atoms in the locks a bit.

Shade gulped as the part of the door to the room fell over. He was becoming increasingly frightened of the younger mutant standing in front of him. I wish Shadow was here, she could calm her sister he thought to himself. "First of all don't call me pretty boy" he said, despite the inner voice telling him to keep his mouth shut. "And the explanation is simple" he added "Shadow is my girlfriend."

River took a few steps forward, not at all afraid of Shade and his "energy sucking" thing. She had already made most of her body virtually nonexistent, so good luck tapping into her energy. River looked up at him with her fists clenched at her sides, threatening to come up with the weight of a sledgehammer and break his face in.
"Oh yeah? You just thought you'd take away the only person in my life that hasn't left me behind and I would be okay with that?!" She demanded, almost trembling with anger by now.

Shade stood his ground as River approached, depite his instincts to back away. He knew that her powers were quite dangerous, and she could hurt him severely with a simple hit. He also knew that if he tried to use his powers on her, then he would end up severely injured by Shadow. "I'm not taking her away from you" he said. "And shouldn't you be happy for her?" he questioned. "You are her sister afterall" he added.

River glared at Shade, almost speechless with indignation. Happy for Shadow? To be dating this pig-headed, arrogant, self-abosrobed bird boy? Hardly! Why should she be happy? River had never liked Shade much, but had tolerated him because Shadow had asked her to. But she would never accept him as her sister's boyfriend!
"You're not worthy of her," River spat out ungraciously, "You hardly know anything about her. I'll bet you couldn't tell me anything about her." She challenged.

Shade felt his heart break a little at River's comment. He had told himself that many times before, and believed it, until Shadow returned his feelings. Clearly River didn't understand that relationships involved consent from both sides. "She obviously thinks I'm worthy" he said pointedly before heading towards the door. He didn't have to stand there and listen to her talk down to him.

River clenched her fists, feeling as if her heart was going to burst out of her chest. But she no longer knew if it was anger or a sense of betrayal that kept that feeling there. Why would Shadow abandon her? She'd promised never to leave.
"Fine," River muttered, feeling defeated. "Take her away, like everyone else." She knew it was petty of her to be so mad. She knew she probably had little right to be this way. But River was hurt that Shadow hadn't talked to her about this. She was hurt that Shade hadn't thought to ask her if she could share her sister. No one understood. Everyone just thought that River was the cheerful one, the friendly one. But River always felt like she was alone. Shadow had been spending less time with her lately, and now River knew why.

Shade stopped in his tracks as he heard the muttered words. He turned around to face River, his yellow gaze showing compassion. "I'm not trying to take her away from you" he said, walking towards her. "I don't want to steal her from you" he added "that was never my intention."

River didn't look at him. She was ashamed of her anger, her actions... but she still felt justified, which only made her feel worse.
"Then what are your intentions?" River asked quietly, her grey-blue eyes staring at something only she could see. The faces of her parents... River trying to wrench herself out of Shadow's arms when she pulled her away so they could escape the Hunters. She'd felt so empty then. Shadow had been the only person around to comfort her. If she lost her sister, River didn't know what she'd do. She didn't want anyone to hurt her sister. River wanted, somehow, to protect Shadow like she'd protected her once upon a time.

Shade thought about the question for a moment. He didn't really have any clear intentions at the moment, besides loving her and protecting her. "All I want to do is love her and protect her" he replied. "I also want to treat her like the princess she is" he added. He knew it sounded cheesy, but it was true, she was his princess.
