River glanced at him and sighed. She supposed she had to accept whatever he said. She wasn't a mindreader, so she couldn't know if he was really telling the truth or not. But if Shadow had picked him, too, then River supposed he must not be bad. Her sister was too smart to fall in love with just anybody.
"Okay, whatever," River said, shrugging, "Date her then. But if you hurt her you'll have to answer to me." She said coolly, with a short nod.

Shade smiled at River, happy that she finally understood. "Trust me I could never hurt her" he said. "And I know that if by some chance I do, I'll be in a lot of pain" he added, only slightly joking.

River looked at Shade for a long time, her expression hard to read. She shrugged slightly, opting not to say anything about that particular subject. She knew her sister well enough to realize that if she really liked Shade, then even if he did something bad to her, she wouldn't have the heart to hurt him back. Shadow cared too much about those close to her. She was deeply loyal and would give up everything for the sake of someone she loved. River knew that well, because that's precisely what Shadow had done time and time again for her younger sister.

Shade studied River's body language, her expression was an unreadable one. He hoped that she understood that he couldn't hurt her ever, she was too precious. He looked from her to his feet, trying to think of a way to break the awkward silence that filled the air.

River sighed and looked around the practice room. She and her sister had come a long way from being runaways, that was for sure. She often shuddered at the thought of returning to that life, full of fear and uncertainty. The only thing River had been sure of was Shadow. It hurt to think her sister would ever not have time for her, but RIver was happy that Shadow had found someone she liked.
"I wish she'd get back from her mission with Falling Star," River sighed. "I thought they'd be back hours ago..." She grumbled.

Shade had taken to training in order to pass the time until Shadow returns. "Yeah, me too" he said. "I hope she's okay" he added, thinking of what he would do if someone hurt Shadow. Drain their life force a voice in his mind said to him.
"Rabbit's probably just giving them a hard time" he said. "I went on a retrieval mission for him once, that kid is very goodat avoiding capture is he's not ready to come back."

River sighed crossly.
"I swear, when they drag that sorry excuse for a teenager back here I'm going to cause his ankles to fall into the floor for the next week." She said. "Maybe that would keep the vagabond from wandering off again."

"I'm sure he'll have to talk to Circe when he gets back" Shade said "I think that'll be punishment enough." "Plus Falling Star went to get him, I don't think she'll put up with his antices for too long" he added.

River sighed.
"Maybe you're right. But if anything happens to Shadow, I'm going to jinx his ankles anyways." She said, crossing her arms over her chest and sticking her chin out stubbornly. She didn't give a rip who "talked" to Rabbit. If he caused any more problems for her sister, he'd have to answer to her.

Shade let out a chuckle at River's statement. "Well if anything happens to her, I'll be hunting down whoever hurt her" he said "and stealing most, if not all of their life force." He wasn't joking at all, he'd find the person who hurt her no matter what, even if he got injured in the process. "And of course you're invited to join me" he added.

"I don't know about life force," River said with a dastardly smile, "But how about I make their feet weigh more than an elephant so they can't run away from you?" She wiggled her eyebrows comically, feeling more at ease with Shade now. They seemed to have a common goal, which was always nice. Shadow had few friends, so sometimes River felt like she was trying to protect her sister alone.
"Oh, and I'd say definitely drain it all." She said with a solemn expression on her face.

Shade listened to River's suggestion, and smiled. "I like the way you think" he said. He found River rather easy to talk to when she wasn't threatening bodily harm. "And yeah, most likely all of it" he added "but Shadow doesn't like me using my powers full on."

River sighed.
"Yeah, I suppose so. But you probably won't tell her. And I won't tell her. What she doesn't know won't hurt her." River said with a wink, nodding as if she were deciding something.

Shade liked the way River's mind worked, she was quite devious. "That's a good point" he said. "If she doesn't know then she can't get mad at either of us" he added.

"Precisely," River said with a grave nod.
"And I will let you in on a secret..." River raised her eyebrows slightly and smiled, "Shadow's not really quite as scary as she makes you think she is. Big sis really is a softie." River chuckled and ran a hand through her coarse dark hair, enjoying the feel of the silky fibers brushing against her skin.
"But don't tell her I said that or she might actually retaliate." River said with a smirk.
