"Yeah, I understand. And sure that sounds great" Alana said. She was excited about the prospect of spending even more time with Daman tomorrow. "Good night Daman" she said, leaning to place a kiss on his cheek.

Daman blushed when she kissed him and smiled like a goofy, star-struck schoolboy.
"G-good night," he said, squeezing her hand once more before turning to make his way into the darkness. He hoped to get back before Tails woke up, though he thought that the sound he had heard might be Tails. I hope not, Daman thought. I don't think he'd like me telling other people about his insecurities. Daman sighed. Probably should have thought of that before I did.

Tails curled tighter in on himself. Tears were flowing freely and soaking his knees. He knew his closeness with Daman couldn't last forever. He always knew that Daman would get tired of dealing with him and his problems. He had always prayed it wouldn't be true, but it was.

Daman paused when he heard crying. Oh no... He rounded the corner and saw Tails curled up in the darkness, looking pitiful and small and sad. Remorse filled Daman at the sight. He crouched next to Tails and put his hand on the boy's knee.
"Hey, buddy," Daman said in a gentle voice. "What are you doing out here? What's wrong? Why don't we go back to the room and talk, okay?"

Tails hissed at Daman's touch and jerked his knee away, it felt like he had been burnt. He should his head at Daman's question. "Just go back to her" he said between sobs. He didn't get why Daman was pretending to care, it just made it hurt even more.

Daman started, realizing that he wasn't wearing his gloves and he had probably burnt Tails by touching him. He jerked back like he had burned himself and not the boy, feeling shame and horror wash over him. His emotions burned in his chest and he choked back a sob.
"Tails," he said, though his voice sounded a bit strangled, "I... I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. I didn't mean it..." He stared down at his hands, hating them for hurting his friends. His white wings curled themselves around him, like a natural barrier between himself and anyone around him. He pressed his back into the wall opposite where Tails was hunched and slid to the floor, holding his head in his hands. He hated his powers. He hated how they made him feel. But at that moment he had to get over his own self-loathing, for Tails' sake. He glanced up and whispered, "And I don't want to go back to her right now. She's important. But you're more important because you're my best friend. My bratan." Daman tucked his knees into his chest and curled his shoulders into his knees, trying to make himself feel smaller. His remorse was eating away at him. Perhaps being around Alana wasn't healthy for him after all. It made him complacent. Made him forget what he could do to those he cared about.

Tails lifted his head at Daman's choked voice. His best friend sounded like he was in so much pain. He studied his brother with red eyes and took in his appearance, he looked upset, angry and really sad. Tails ears perked at Daman's statement. "I... I am?" he asked, his voice quiet and rough from crying.

Daman glanced between his knees, his dark eyes narrowing in pain.
"You doubt it? You're like my brother, Tails. The only family I've had since I left Russia. I wouldn't give you up. And I wish I could stop hurting you..." Tears began forming in Daman's eyes, and he brushed them away, frustrated at his own display of weakness in front of Tails. But once the tears came, he couldn't stop them. It had been a long time since he'd cried about anything. He had thought they'd dried up on that ship that had carried him away from death and horror and sadness. But he had been wrong, it seemed.

"You're the only fmaily I remember" Tails said. He noticed Daman's tears and felt his heart constrict. He wanted nothing more than to hug Daman and comfort him, but he couldn't. "You don't hurt me" he said "you protect me." He crawled across the hall until he was sitting next to Daman.

Daman glanced at Tails, who sat beside him. He wanted to reach out and hug the little boy, tell him that no matter what happened he would never leave him behind. He would never abandon his friend. His brother. He would have to satisfy himself with words, though. It seemed harder after his brief interlude with Alana.
"Tails. I will always be here for you, okay? No matter what happens. Having other friends doesn't mean I'll ever forget you. Because you're more than a friend. You're family. So don't feel sad. Don't worry about me leaving you behind. It won't happen. I will protect you always, okay? I will."

Tails nodded and smiled at his brother. He felt stupid for crying over Daman meeting a new friend. He should've known better, should've known that Daman would never leave him. "Can... can we go back now?" he asked. He was getting cold sitting in the hallway.

Daman sighed and nodded. He pushed himself to his feet and stood, his wings still wrapped around his body protectively. The thrill of meeting Alana again and even of his nighttime flight was gone. All that was left was misery and shame. Daman hated his powers for what they continued to do to others. That was probably half the reason he wanted to be around Alana. She made him feel normal, for once. But he would have to be careful. Feeling normal had already made him complacent once. He didn't want to hurt anyone innocent ever again.

Tails uncurled his tail and got to his feet. He winced when his burnt skin pulled. He knew Daman didn't hurt him on puropse, he knew he was trying to comfort him. He followed after Daman as they walked down the hallway. He had decided that he was going to stay in their room tomorrow.

Daman followed Tails back to the room. Once they were both inside he fished around his drawers for a small vial he kept in his personal effects at all times. At least, when he wasn't walking around in the middle of the night when most people were asleep. Daman walked over to Tails' bed and set the vial down on it.
"Rub some of that salve on the burn. It'll help it to heal." Daman's voice sounded a bit pathetic even to his own ears, but he decided not to say anything more. The teenage boy walked over to his bed and climbed into it, folding his wings around him like blankets to block out the world.

Tails watched as Daman rumaged through his stuff before placing something on his bed. He listened as Daman spoke and nodded. "Thank you" he said quietly. He carefully pulled off his pants before climbing into bed. He uncapped the salve and rubbed some onto the burn and felt its cooling effects immediately.
He looked over to Daman's bed and saw him blanketed by his wings. He knew he only did that when he was upset. He wished he could comfort his friend, but he didn't know how. "Good night Daman" he said.
