Name: Merissa Katherine Peterson (Ris for short)
Mutant Name: Locket
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Species: Mutant
Ranking: Provider/Designer
Loyalties: Rebellion
Description:
Ris is 5’9”, wears a size 12 shoe, and has a more fleshy, dancer type body. She has very pale skin and thin lips but elegantly shaped lips. Her nose is hooked only slightly, giving her profile a very statuesque, mature look. She has strong bone structure, and ovular grey eyes. Her hair is shoulder-length and often sticks up in finely cut layers. The color is a very flash red, which is quite obviously dyed. Her eyebrows are very faint but elegantly curved. She has a very interesting taste in fashion that has a lot of rips, belts, buckles, spikes, and studs mixed in with some washed out colors and comfortable sneakers.
Powers/Abilities:
Ris has the ability to open virtually anything. She’s something of a technology-based mutant, in that she can “communicate” with her mind what she wants the locks to do. While she is quite good with this part of her power, the bigger part that can control technology in general is harder for her to control, so she doesn’t often use it. However, Ris is exceptionally good at hacking computer systems, and has an innate understanding of their inner workings. She calls this her “dweeb talent”, but it’s really a gift given by the mutated cells of her brain. Ris also has an affinity for designing cool tools. Her invention skills are considered quite helpful by most, and a bit annoying by those that have personal experience with her “failures”.
Personality:
Ris can be described as opinionated, stubborn, and sarcastic. She rarely gives up an opportunity to say what she thinks, and likes to feel that she’s right in every circumstance. Ris has a horrible habit of forming judgments without considering each side, and once she forms a view on something, it’s hard to change her mind. She isn’t afraid of humans, like some mutants are. She sees most of them as quite safe, reacting out of fear more than anything else. But she also believes that in order to survive, the mutants should use their powers to keep the humans either completely unknowing of their existence or keep them out of the mutants’ way. She reflects this belief in her job as a Provider for the Order.
History:
Riley Peterson was a feisty, fun-loving teen. She never listened to her parents, and always spent too much time with the partying crowd. No matter what sense was spoken to her, she was always looking for a new way to get into trouble. That was the reason she woke up one morning in a stranger’s bed, having no idea what had happened. When Riley found out she was pregnant, she didn’t even have a name to call. She wanted to get rid of the problem, but one of her more concerned friends told her parents, and they wouldn’t let Riley escape responsibility for her actions. Riley hated pregnancy, and didn’t want to keep the baby. Her parents still insisted, and so it was that Riley gave birth to her little baby girl at the tender age of seventeen. When she first held the child, Riley was spellbound. She couldn’t believe something so precious and beautiful could exist. Riley’s parents had offered to take the child and raise it while she finished school, but Riley had wanted to give the child up for adoption. Holding her, though, Riley changed her mind. She would go along with her parent’s plan. Riley seemed to change as she took care of her daughter. She loved Merissa Katherine and worked harder than she would have formerly thought possible to give her child a good future. Her parents were quite shocked by her transformation. From early on, it was apparent that Merissa was different. She learned things faster than other children, and began drawing and building things at a very tender age that would be quite impressive of a child three times her age. Merissa also could get out of every room, crib, house – no locks could hold her back. Riley thought it was a bit odd, but since Merissa never got into much trouble she didn’t mind it so much. As Merissa grew, so did her powers. She began messing with school computers, getting into locked rooms, and doing other bizarre things. She got in trouble a lot, and caused tons of trouble for Riley. When Merissa was eleven, she was already in her first year of college. That was when the hunters came. Riley was arrested, and Merissa captured. No one was quite sure what sort of mutant she was – which was probably why she easily escaped the prison cell. Merissa freed her mother as well and the two ran away together. Merissa left her mother with her grandparents and told her not to worry, that she would be okay. Merissa began traveling, trying to keep one step ahead from the rest. She scraped up a living the only way she knew how. The hunters nearly captured her several times in the first few years of wandering. But it wasn’t until her fourteenth birthday that Merissa was caught. She was brought to a mutant testing facility and experimented on for nearly three months. The man that ran the facility seemed to understand her powers, and kept her dosed up on tranquilizers so that she couldn’t escape. But one night she wasn’t given enough and she managed to break the chains that bound her. From then on, it was easy enough to escape the facility – avoiding the monitors was probably the hardest thing. Merissa kept running until she met up with a mutant scout. The scout assured Merissa that the Order was a good place. She joined up, and has worked there ever since.
