Name: Avery Dekker
Mutant/Code Name: Circe
Age: Immortal (20 in body)
Gender: Female
Species: Mutant
Ranking/Position: Mutant Leader
Loyalties: Rebellion
Description:
Circe is a beautiful woman with flowing red hair and ivory skin. She has a long face and tear-shaped grey eyes. Her face is heart-shaped, and her body is rather lanky and tall. She has a long nose and faintly colored lips. Her skin is flawless except at her shoulder blade, where she has a dark scar that tore into her skin. The scar is shaped like a crescent moon, if it had to be compared to something. Circe is about 6’1”, weights 120 lbs, and wears a size 10 shoe.
Powers/Description:
Circe has the ability to transform herself into a physical form of light – almost like a drop of sunlight. She usually takes the form of an animal – most frequently a Chinese dragon. She can use this light to heal, to blind, to paralyze – in her light-form she can even speak telepathically with those near her (though she cannot read their minds). Circe also feels emotions in her light-form, though she cannot manipulate them. Her power allows her to travel at the speed of light, and she can carry others as well, to a moderate degree. Her light cannot harm physically as fire can, but it affects the mind in a very interesting way.
Personality:
Circe is very passionate about her cause. She believes in her friends and is loyal to them above all. Unlike other mutant leaders of the past, she is not willing to risk lives to achieve her goal of mutant equality. Circe can be overbearing at times. She’s a bit like a mother, always concerned over the safety of her friends. But she’s caring and wise, and a good friend to have. Circe always works to understand both sides of an argument – this is why she frequently tells those in her command that harming humans is to be avoided if possible. While Circe values all life, she is not a pacifist, and will fight if that is what’s necessary. She is not at all secretive (about anything), but she usually doesn’t say anything without being asked – so if you want to know about her, you need only ask the right questions.
History:
Avery Dekker was born in Haarlem in 1934. When she was six years old, the Nazis invaded the Netherlands and took control of her home. Her father was Dutch and her mother was Jewish. Therefore she was forced to abide by the German’s laws, wearing a golden star on her clothes. When she was only eight, the Nazi took her to Auschwitz. She and her mother were separated, and Avery somehow had the feeling that she would never see her again. Avery was among a group of prisoners that witnessed a young boy bending a metal gate with his will. That was when she understood something – the unmistakable bond that existed between those who were different. She had learned of her powers early on at the age of four, and with her mother’s help, successfully hid them from those around her. But she was discovered trying to help some younger children waiting to be killed as the night progressed, showing them a little orb of light in her hands and telling them that God had given her that power to remind everyone that He was watching. Some of the Nazi found her and dragged her to the man that ran the concentration camp. He told her that he would protect her mother if she showed him her powers. She obeyed willingly, not knowing that her mother was already dead. The man that ran the camp kept her near him, calling her his “special pupil”. He treated her nicely, and taught her to speak both German and English, as well as helped her progress with her power. Avery had thought he was her friend – that is, until she found a book of names of the people exterminated and found out that her mother had been dead for four years. Avery’s emotions boiled inside of her, and in her rage she felt her skin burn away and she transformed herself into light. Using this power, Avery flew out of the camp, flying until she collapsed in an Irish field. She was found by an old couple who took her in and helped her. She spent years there, learning to work on the sheep farm. She never talked about her past, and her foster parents never asked. When Avery turned eighteen, she decided to leave and find out what happened to her father. She learned he was still alive and living in Haarlem, in their old house. Avery showed up on his doorstep and was welcomed with open arms. The war had been over for years, but her father had suffered every day, having no idea what had happened to his wife and child. The years passed, but Avery noticed something odd about her body. It seemed to be frozen in one state, unchanging from her twentieth birthday on. Her father noticed, too, and said that it was a gift from God. Avery was forced to travel often so that those living around Haarlem would not notice her appearance so much. But she managed to spend many years with her father, until he died of cancer when Avery was “forty”. She then decided to travel back to Ireland, but her home there had been passed on to strangers. The memories were so bittersweet. Avery decided it would be best to form new ones. She traveled across the sea to America, becoming a citizen. She lived in Florida for many years, working as a ghostwriter. Avery wrote many stories about the holocaust, hoping to engrave those horrors into the minds of people forever. It was near this time that Avery met him – Brian Forrester. He was a mutant, like her, that could move earth. They became very close, and Avery was shocked to find that he did not age either. They lived together for years, not exactly “married” since the certificate would always tie them down to some time period, but still considering themselves so. Avery and Brian loved each other, and hoped to start a family. But they found out that Avery was unable to have children. They filled the gap mostly by volunteering with children – Brian worked mostly in public relations jobs with adoption agencies, and Avery became a teacher. The years seemed to pass uneventfully – until the Cuban Missile Crisis, where mutants were exposed once and for all. Brian and Avery felt the pressure of hiding their powers even more than ever before, and moved around incessantly. They eventually came to join the Brotherhood of Mutants, but left shortly after finding out the truth behind Magneto’s agenda. They wished to live with the humans, not exterminate them. This principle is what brought them to Charles Xavier. They became teachers at his school, teaching there for many years. When the mutants were forced out of normal society, Brian and Avery suffered greatly from the loss of community. Brian soon began to feel that a new Order should be formed. He built the Hideout and then found mutants to live there, forming the Rebellion in order to protect mutants. In the end, Brian died mysteriously. Only Avery knows what happened to him. The years passed and people forgot about Brian – and especially his connection with their new leader, whom they know only as Circe.
