Description:
Garfield is a well-built boy with fair skin. He’s roughly 5’8”, with a heart-shaped face and an average-long nose that tips upward only slightly. His hair is short and coarse and a dark red color that seems almost unnatural. His eyes are light green-blue, pupil-less, and surrounded by a strange inky black birthmark that looks rather like eyeliner. He has a scar on his forehead shaped like the Japanese kanji for “love”. Garfield usually wears a black mid-sleeve shirt with a white T-shirt over it, black shorts, and black hiking boots – all the better to run with. He wears a size 10 shoe.
Abilities:
Garfield can control sand and bend it to his will. He can create sand from earth to use, and he can move it about as he chooses. Garfield can solidify his sand and make a nearly impenetrable shield. He can use his sand to move about, almost like a moving platform, and he can control enough sand to make literal waves of it. He also has moves that will crush an opponent by constricting the sand that surrounds them. This is a very dangerous move and if trapped in it, Garfield’s enemy has next to no chance to survive.
Personality:
Garfield is very anti-social. He doesn’t like people all that much, and feels awkward in the presence of others. Due to circumstances in his past, he’s not quick to trust people, and he tends to put his own self-preservation above all else. He doesn’t feel adverse to killing people, since he’s had to do just that to survive. In some ways, he sees it as the only thing he’s good at. However, all he really wants is to be loved. Garfield has never known anyone who does not fear him for his powers, and he only wishes to have friends like any other person. He gave up that hope a long time ago, though, and constantly finds himself in despair. Garfield is therefore a loner mostly, even when his deepest wish is to be a part of something, to feel accepted.
History:
Garfield Sumner was born in the worst possible circumstances. His mother, who had never wanted a baby, shoved him off on his young father and left them both behind. His father, who had two children already, did not have time or patience to raise another child. Garfield was left mostly in the care of his siblings, Tamara and Kyle. His powers emerged when he was only three, and his siblings feared him ever since. They tried to convince their father to turn him over to the government. Finally Garfield’s father relented, handing him off to a Psych ward where he was locked away. They did horrible things to him, trying to figure out the source of his powers. One day Garfield’s uncle Malcolm came to fetch him. He learned that his father had been murdered. Garfield was deemed healthy for the moment, since Malcolm’s presence calmed him and made him less aggressive. He tried to make friends with his siblings, but they still didn’t trust him. Garfield’s only friend in the world was Malcolm. In the end, though, Malcolm only wanted to get rid of his nephew. He tried to murder Garfield in the night, but ended up being swallowed by the sand Garfield always kept close by his bed. Garfield was crushed by the betrayal of his only friend in the world. He had been taught Japanese by his uncle, and as he sat beside his betrayer’s dead body, he swore that he would never trust anyone again. He swore that he would love no one else, and with that carved into his own skin a deep cut in the shape of the Japanese kanji for “love”, a symbol of his vow. After that, Garfield disappeared. He traveled far and wide in search of purpose, killing anyone who tried to drag him back to the labs. He slowly began to feel that he had no other reason to live besides constantly killing, and so began to lose his mind.
