Daman looked at Tails through tangled strands of his dark hair. He really needed a hair cut, it seemed. Then he sighed and leaned back. Tails was not making this easy. He really wanted to spend time with Alana, but at the same time he didn't want to leave Tails alone.
"You can always hang out with me, Tails," Crucible said from his place on the windowsill, his eyes not lifting from his book. "I could read to you. I've been told my voice puts people to sleep, but I bet I can find a story exciting enough to keep you interested." He looked up from his book and his eyebrows rose a tiny bit, though the micro-expression looked quite expressive on his usually emotionless face.

Tails looked over at Crucible. He smiled at his friend. "That sounds good" he said quietly. He wouldn't mind spending time with Crucible. It would also allow Daman to go after Alana. I just hope he'll walk me to my room later he thought to himself.

Daman considered this.
"Well... okay. If you're sure. I'll pick you up at three for dinner?" Daman looked at Tails.

Tails turned back to Daman and smiled at his brother. "Sounds great" he said. "I'm sorry about Alana" he added. He was still feeling bad about scaring her off. He hoped that Daman would be in a happier mood when he saw him later.

Daman smiled slightly.
"That's okay, bud. Some other time, maybe." He waved and walked out of the library doors. He glanced both ways and then turned to the right, thinking that he had heard her footsteps turn that way. He hoped he was right, otherwise he'd have to resort to calling her name and wandering around asking if anyone knew her. Again.
-----
Crucible turned to Daman, his eyes peeking over the edge of his book.
"Women," he said solemnly, pointing once again to his book with a solemn nod. Then he got up and walked over to one of the nearest bookshelves.
"In the mood for a Western? Maybe some classics. They have a pretty good translation of Beowulf."

"Bye Daman" Tails said to his retreating friend. He returned his gaze to Crucible and listened as he spoke. He thought about what he wanted to listen to, and couldn't decide. "You can pick" he replied in his quiet tone.

Alana sat in a chair in the great hall. She had a sketch book sitting on her lap and a pencil scratching across the page. She was sketching the scene in front of her, mutants relaxing and chatting amongst themselves.

Daman emerged into the Great Hall. He cast a glance around at the faces, some familiar and some not. But after a minute of searching he saw the face that he most wanted to see. With long strides Daman walked over to the place where Alana sat sketching.
"Hey, there," he said. "Crucible is hanging out with Tails, so I'm free for the afternoon," he added.
------
Crucible considered. He picked out a copy of Beowulf and began reading the first few lines silently. Then he put it back and began fishing through the books again. Finally he pulled out The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.
"Ah, here we are! C.S. Lewis. Always a good choice!" He plopped down next to Tails on his favorite windowsill, his back against the wall and his leg dangling as he opened the book.

Alana looked up at the sound of a voice. She smiled brightly when she noticed it was Daman. "Hey" she said. She was glad Daman had come after her and left his weird friend behind.
**--------------------------------------------**
Tails watched his friend search for a book. He smiled when he saw the choice, it was a book he'd read before. He tucked his kness to his chest and rested his head on them. He was ready to listen to the story.

Daman smiled.
"So, still up for that picnic?" he asked hopefully. "I can get us some mean turkey sandwiches."
----
Crucible began to read.
"There once were four children named Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy..." Despite what he had said about putting people to sleep when he read, he had a quite different reading voice from his normal monotonous way of speaking. It was more expressive, more open. He did little voices for each of the characters, and when he spoke of Lucy venturing into Narnia his tone took on a wondrous sort of inflection. He was not really conscious of the change. Reading was his escape into the life he had lived before tragedy had stolen his family away. It showed, often, when he spoke about things he liked to read. Or when he read aloud.

"Sure, sounds great" Alana replied. She was excited to go on a picnic with Daman.
**-----------------------------**
Tails was enthralled by Crucible's story telling. He liked how he did voices for the different characters. It made Tails feel like he was in Narnia, watching everything play out in front of him.

Daman smiled.
"Great! I can get the food and come back." He was eager to go out, to get away from the stuffy walls of the base and out into the open air with Alana.
----
Crucible continued to read, describing Lucy's meeting with Narnia and her subsequent troubles when her siblings did not believe her story. When he got to the White Witch part, he made her voice all wheedling and manipulative and smiled a little at the tickling of this voice in his nose.

"Okay" she said "I'll wait for you here." She was curious as to where they would go for a picnic. She didn't really know of anywhere around the base where they could go.
**------------------------------------------------**
Tails laughed at Crucible's white witch voice. He was really enjoying the story and spending time with Crucible.

Daman nodded and went to the kitchen to get some sandwiches and root beers. He hoped he got things that Alana would like. When he had stocked up he returned to the Great Hall. Approaching Alana, Daman held up the handbasket and smiled.
"I come bearing gifts," he said with an impish grin.
-----
Crucible read about the four siblings entering into Narnia and the two beavers. He gave Mr. Beaver a gravelly sort of voice and made many funny facial expressions as he spoke the interaction of Mr. and Mrs. Beaver. He enjoyed his reading. It wasn't often that he got to read aloud.

Alana had just finished tucking her stuff away in her bag when he returned. She smiled up at Daman. "Awh you shouldn't have" she said with a smile.
**--------------------------------------------------**
Tails was still enthralled with the story. He closed his eyes and just listened, imagining being in Narnia. It made him feel happy to get lost in a different world for a while.

Daman laughed.
"Well, shall we?" he asked, holding out his arm. It felt a bit odd to be offering to touch someone. Alana's presence soothed his nerves, though, and made the nightmares of the previous night seem unimportant at best.
----
With great animation Crucible described the meeting of Edmund and the Witch. He growled when the wolf spoke, and actually lifted his voice above his normal tone when the Witch yelled at Edmund. He was enjoying himself, though his voice felt a bit unused since he wasn't used to talking so much. He could feel that Tails was benefiting from the reading, though, so he continued to read with great enthusiasm and delight.
