A teenage girl ith long two tone red hair stood in the middle of a clearing. Ash smiled as she looked around, there was absolutely nothing around for miles, so she was free to let her powers out.
She picked a target, a small low growing shrub, and closed her amber eyes. She concentrated and summoned flames to engulf the shrub. She opened her eyes, and smiled at the flaming shrub.

The wilderness stretched out for miles. It was pleasant, not being around people or worrying about Hunters. The red-haired boy was content to make his way through life on the run, as long as it meant seeing things like this. He sat in the boughs of a tree, watching the landscape below. The wind stirred the leaves above him, and a small smile crept onto his face at the feeling of it tickling his skin. Garfield Sumner rarely smiled. There was hardly ever anything to smile about in life. He'd experienced more than enough of pain and suffering, and the only thing that ever seemed to go well for him was killing. He was scared of his powers, sometimes. He was scared that someone would come and try to kill him again, and that he'd be left with another dead body on his hands. The thought made him sick. He closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the trunk. He had to think of other things. He had to distract himself. A loud sound nearby made him start. He almost fell out of the tree, but caught himself and swung his body back onto the branch within moments. Staring with his pupil-less turquoise eyes, Garfield saw a flicker nearby. Was it a fire? How in the world had a fire started in the middle of the wilderness? Garfield sighed. He didn't like to think that a wildfire could take out all of the lush leaves and trees. It would be terrible to see this place be marred by black scars. Reaching out, he grabbed the branch ahead of him and swung himself down from the tree. Sand seemed to fly up from a large backpack he always carried with him, making a soft landing quite easy. He took a few steps forward, raising one hand towards the fire. His sand flew towards it, circling it with a small cyclone that sucked the oxygen out of the air around it.

Ash was contently watching the fire slowly burn the bush, she intended to put it out before it spread. Suddenly the fire went out without her command and she looked at it, puzzled. Her amber gaze scanned her surroundings before landing on a boy, who looked about her age. She noticed that he was kind of cute, and felt a small blush creep onto her cheeks.
"Hello" she said, a friendly smile on her face.

A voice interrupted Garfield's thoughts. He started at the sound of it, immediately feeling defensive. His sand curled up around him, ready to defend him from bullets or other forms of attack. His eyes found the source of the greeting; it was a girl with red hair that was lighter than his, and bright amber eyes. She was quite beautiful, but beauty was something that Garfield was wary of. Beauty could deceive. He stared at her, his pulse quickening, and he wondered why she wasn't trying to attack him. He crouched slightly, ready to run away, but he refused to break eye contact with her.
"Who are you? What do you want?" He called out, his voice completely devoid of emotion. He tried not to let any of his enemies know what he was feeling. It could be a weakness. The scar on Garfield's forehead throbbed suddenly, and he took a step back, wary of confrontation.

Ash was startled at the boys sudden movements. She watched as sand swirled around the boy, it confirmed her suspicions about his powers. She could tell that he was frightened that she would attack him, based on his body language.
"I'm Ash" she replied, the friendly smile still on her face. "And I'm just out here practicing my powers" she added "I didn't mean to startle you."

A frown crinkled Garfield's brow. Her words had confused him somewhat. Or maybe it was her smile that really had him wondering. He had no idea why anyone would smile at him. It had been so long... Images of his uncle flashed in his mind, causing him to clench his fists in anger.
"Powers? You have... you have powers too?" He frowned and then glanced at the burnt bush. Recognition flickered in his eyes and he glanced at her warily. Hunters were dangerous... but rouges could be even more so. He had to be on his guard now.
"You're the one that set the bush on fire?" He asked.

Ash watched as his fists clenched in anger. She was starting to get weary of him, he seemed easily angered. Then she watched as he connected the buring bush back to her and she smiled.
"Yeah, I have power over fire" she explained. "And yes that was me, I was just practicing my abilities."
"So what's your name?" she asked curiously. She was very interested in getting to know the loner.

Garfield could see that this girl didn't already know. Maybe she wasn't hunting him after all? Either way, it was better for him not to tell her too much. After a momentary deliberation, he decided that it wouldn't be dangerous to give her his real name.
"It's Garfield," he said finally. "Like the cat." He said this without much emotion, which made it funnier.

Ash waited patiently, she could practically hear the gears turning in his head. She held back a giggle as he said his name then directly compared it to the cartoon cat. "Garfield, thats a cool name" she commented. She was curious as to if it was his real name, or a code name.
"So what brings you out here?" she asked.

Garfield looked to his left and saw that his backpack had come. He had been slowly dragging it to his side with his sand, and now he picked it up slowly, drawing his arm through the single strap. He looked back up at the girl named Ash.
"I'm just passing through." He said finally. "If I'm trespassing I can leave." As Garfield spoke, his sand began drifting upwards into the open top of his backpack. The tan colored bag began to swell, and Garfield could feel the weight pressing harder and harder against his shoulders. But he was well accustomed to it by now, and it didn't bother him in the slightest.

Ash watched as Garfield's backpack made its way over to him, by the way of sand. She was intrigued by his power, it seemed like it could be very powerful. She watched as he slung the backpack over his shoulder, it appeared he was about to leave. "Oh you're not tresspassing" she said "I'm just passing through as well. So stay as long as you wish." She shot the cute boy another smile.

Ash's smiles were beginning to unnerve Garfield. Was she trying to lull him into a false sense of security? Or was she just a smiley person? He knew of people that smiled for no reason. But they'd never smiled at him before. Most people thought he was very creepy, when he was forced to enter society for money or food. He would have been attracted, perhaps, without the scar on his forehead or the strange raccoon-black around his eyes. But he supposed Ash could overlook those flaws because she was far enough to way to think that the black birthmarks were drawn by eyeliner. As for the scar, it often looked like a tattoo from a distance. So she just can't see me all that clearly. He decided gravely.
"I don't like to stay in one place too long. It's not safe." He said very solemnly.

Ash watched as thoughts flittered through Garfield's head, the wheels turning, making an almost deafening sound. She wondered what was going through the teen's mind, if the thoughts involved her or not.
Ash's smiled dropped at his comment, he seemed like he was very lonely. "So where do you live?" she asked curiously. She doubted that he would answer her, but she decided to try anyway.

A memory seemed to pass before Garfield's eyes. He could see his uncle's house, with its cabin-like exterior and its warm friendly interior. He could remember his room especially. It had been everything he liked. There had been a big window, letting in plenty of light. He had missed light as a child, living in the asylum. Sadness pierced Garfield's heart when he thought of that room. It was where his life had changed forever - the place he'd suffered his greatest betrayal.
"Nowhere," he said quietly, "I've never had a home before. Not a day since I was born." He murmured.

Ash waited for his reply, and regretted the question when a pained look flashed through his eyes. She felt the urge to cry when he answered her question. He seemed so lost and all she wanted to do was hug him, but quickly decided against it.
"I'm so sorry" she said "I shouldn't have asked." She dropped her amber gaze to the ground, trying to hold back the tears welling in her eyes.
