Garfield released her hand and put his arm around her shoulders to support her. Lifting the cup to her lips, he prompted her to drink, his voice calm and quiet. He hoped to encourage Ash and make her feel better. Garfield was completely exhausted, though, and the heat of her skin on his arm seemed to burn him. He let Ash fall back on the cot slowly when she'd finished drinking. Looking up, he was surprised to see a woman staring down at him. It was the doctor, who made quick work of examining Ash. She pronounced that the girl wasn't in danger, and only needed rest and food.
"I hope you will take both as well," the doctor added before walking off to another patient. Garfield sighed and looked back at Ash with eyes full of concern.
"Are you going to be able to rest?" He asked quietly.

Ash leaned onto Garfield's arm, thankful for the extra support. She took gulps of the water in front of her, with a murmured thanks. She layed back down on the cot, thankful for the comfort of the bed. Ash just layed there while the doctor examined her, willing her to leave so she could sleep.
Ash looked up at Garfield and smiled. "Of course Isago" she whispered, before her eyes slipped shut and sleep claimed her.

Garfield tipped his head to one side, wondering what she'd meant by "Isago". He wasn't sure he recognized the language, if it was another language. It sounds nice, though. He thought, watching as Ash fell into a heavy sleep. He looked up when he heard footsteps and was surprised and rather frightened to see the girl he'd fought with back when Ash had broken her arm. His fear receded, though, when he saw that Falling Star was just behind her.
"I'm glad to see she's safe." The girl said gravely. Falling Star nodded.
"I was certainly worried," she murmured, brushing a lock of her long inky black hair over her shoulder.
"Well, I'll go then." The girl nodded to Garfield and then left. Falling Star approached the cot and held out a change of clothes for Garfield.
"When Ash is well she has clothes in her room." The girl said calmly.
"Thank you, Falling Star." He said, "You've been very... nice to me." Garfield murmured awkwardly, not really knowing what to say.
"You protected a comrade of mine, and that makes you little less than a comrade yourself." Falling Star nodded slightly and then turned to leave. Garfield found a smaller cave that he learned was used as a laboratory and used it to change into the clean clothes. He came out of the cave wearing loose tan shorts and a maroon shirt with a golden bird printed into the front of it. The red-haired boy made his way to the cot beside Ash's and curled up on it, facing her. He reached out and took her hand in his, reveling in the feel of her skin against his. I'll be sorry to leave you... He thought, and closed his eyes against the thought. Then he slowly felt unconsciousness dragging at him, and he fell asleep.

Ash was lost in her dreams, that all seemed to revolve around a certain red headed boy. She sighed as she felt herself waking up. She blinked open her eyes and noticed that Garfield was across from her, his hand linked with hers. She smiled, and looked at him as he slept. He looked content and peacefull in his sleep.

Garfield sensed a difference in the air around him, and his eyes instantly shot open. He looked forward for a few seconds before focusing on Ash's face. A small smile crept over his features, and he gently brushed his thumb against the top of her hand.
"Did you sleep well?" He asked in a quiet voice, his pale turquoise eyes searching her deep amber ones.

Ash noticed Garfield's small smile and felt her own grow. "I did" she replied, blushing at the gentle stroking on her hand. "Did you sleep well, Isago?" she asked. She didn't know why she felt the need to call him that, she thought it just fit.

Garfield tipped his head to the side, more interested in what she called him than the question she had asked.
"What does that mean?" He asked softly, "Isago?" His voice was quiet, his expression earnest. Garfield wasn't at all used to having people call him things other than bad names, so he was curious about what Ash was calling him now.

Ash was expecting the question, so she searched her brain for the meaning of one of the few japanese words she knew. "Isago is japanese for sand" she said. "I just thought it suited you" she explained. "But I can stop calling you that if you don't like it" she added quickly. She didn't want to offend him in any way, she was falling hard for him.

Garfield looked up at her for a few moments, considering. Then he smiled slightly.
"That's okay," he said. "I like it. It's better than Garfield anyway," he added with a playful shimmer in his eye. He thought that a lot of mutants chose new names, and that he wouldn't mind being called Isago. He liked Japanese, anyway. Looking into Ash's eyes, Garfield decided that he wanted that to be his new name. He didn't want to be remembered for what he had failed to be anymore. He wanted to be known as what he was.

Ash practically beamed as he accepted the name she gave him. "I'm glad you like it" she said. She didn't know what she would've done if he rejected the name, probably something stupid like cry.
"Thanks for bringing me home" she said, gripping his hand a little tighter. "I don't know how I would've managed it alone, and it would have been rather lonely" she added.

Isago smiled.
"You're the only person who's ever understood me. I... I just wish..." His voice faltered and he looked away, feeling guilty. How could he bear to leave Ash behind? But he couldn't live here, could he? There were so many people... But they wouldn't betray him, would they? He had already been helped by Falling Star, the doctor... And those people cared for Ash, too. They couldn't be all bad. But Isago couldn't decide whether or not he could live here. Glancing into Ash's face, he thought that maybe it would be worth it to be betrayed again, if only it meant he could spend more time with her.

Ash smiled at his comment. She didn't understand why no one else wanted to spend time with him, he was like no one she had ever met, he was unique and she liked that. "You just wish what, Isago?" she asked. She immediately regretted the question, when she saw him turn away. Does he want to leave? she wondered I hope not, I would love for him to stay, my heart might just break if he left.

Isago flinched inwardly at her question, knowing that he had to give an answer but not knowing what to say.
"I just wish that it would last." He said finally, remembering the few times he had felt loved in his life. Those times had been precious but fleeting, always ending in pain and betrayal. Part of Isago didn't believe that would happen this time, but a small voice inside of him told him he couldn't trust anyone. He was unaccustomed to trusting, and it was a strange sensation to even trust Ash the way he had grown to.

Ash felt her heart break at those words. He's going to leave she thought sadly to herself. "But this could last" she said, choking back tears. All she wanted was for him to stay, she didn't inderstand why he wouldn't. "Just stay" she said, looking up at him, feeling a few hot tears leak free.

Isago's heart seemed to tear itself to pieces in his chest. Looking at her sad eyes, the tears on her cheeks, he couldn't think straight. He looked deep into those eyes and felt worse than he ever had before.
"Happiness has never been my fate...." He murmured gently, looking down at their intertwined hands and wondering if that was still true now.
