Daman sat still in the silence, listening to Tails' breathing. He had never liked the nighttime much. It reminded him of the orphanage, the quiet, the kids crying because their bellies were empty and their bruises hurt where they'd been beaten during the day. The boy closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He knew Tails was asleep, but for some reason he didn't want to move. So Daman leaned against the wall and closed his eyes, allowing himself to go into a light sleep.

Tails blinked his eyes open, thankful for a nightmare free sleep. He turned his head and noticed Daman asleep leaning against the wall. It didn't look like it was a very comfortable position and Tails hoped that Daman wouldn't be too sore.
"Good morning Daman" he said softly, knowing it would wake his friend.

Daman's eyes blinked open, a little before Tails' spoke. He turned to his friend and saw him peeking down over the edge of the bed.
"Hey there," he said, rising to his feet and brushing off his loose black pants. "I guess this means it's time for a trip to the kitchen," he said with a yawn. Stretching out his wings, the boy crossed to his dresser and began searching through his drawers for something to wear. He usually dressed more thickly when he went out with anyone, mostly to avoid scorching them if they should accidentally bump into each other. So Daman settled on thick leather pants, a long-sleeved shirt, a coat, and of course the bindings that held his wings down in place. With his clothes bundled in his arm, he turned to Tails and smiled.
"Be back soon," he said.

Tails smiled as his friend left in search of food. He knew he should probably get dressed so that they could leave as soon as Daman got back. He didn't want to risk running into too many others.
He slipped from his bed, instantly missing the warmth of his bed. He walked over to his dresser and grabbed some clothes, he decided on long black pants and a too big green t-shirt. He also grabbed the bandages from the drawer to wrap his arm.
He quickly changed out of his pajamas and into his selected outfit. He then began the task of wrapping his arm, hiding the dark fur that grew there. He tied off the bandage and sat back on his bed, awaiting Daman's return.

Daman went to the public lavatory and changed into his day clothes. With his night clothes tucked underneath his arm, the boy made his way down the corridors towards the kitchens. He hoped that he would run into someone in charge soon--and he was not disappointed. He saw Falling Star standing in the hallway speaking to a red-headed mutant--Locket. When she had dismissed her Falling Star turned to Daman. She examined his expression for a moment, her lips pressed together thoughtfully.
"You'll be wanting the day off again, I expect?" she asked expectantly.
"Yeah. Tails had another rough night," Daman replied.
"Go ahead, then," Falling Star said, her expression gentle. "Make sure he gets all the rest he needs." She patted Daman on the shoulder. He winced at the physical contact, but since it seemed that Falling Star hadn't been burnt he didn't say anything. He gave a slight nod to his superior and then made his way to the kitchens. He had one of the cooks make up a basket with his and Tails' favorite sandwiches and drinks. Then he made his way back to their room. When he came in he saw Tails waiting for him, dressed in a loose green shirt that looked too big for him.
"Hey, there," Daman said, lifting the picnic basket he held in one hand and tossing his night clothes away with the other. "I've got the spoils. Ready to go enjoy the fresh air?"

Tails fiddled with the end of his bandage. He was getting impatient, he wanted to get out as soon as possible. He was looking forward to his day with Daman, although he felt bad for making him take another day off because of him.
He looked up from his bandage when he heard the door open. He smiled when he saw Daman was back. He jumped to his feet, his tail twitching in excitement, much to his embarassment. "Yeah, lets go" he said excitedly.

Daman laughed at his friend's reaction and switched the picnic basket to his other arm.
"Okay, then. Let us depart, good sir," Daman said, his Russian accent melding into something of a mock-British accent. The boy smiled at Tails and then propped open the door with one foot, motioning for Tails to go out before him.

Tails smiled widely at his friends antics. "Why thank you kind sir" he said, bowing slightly before slipping out the door. He glanced down the hallway, thankful that there didn't seem to be any others out and about.

Daman quickly followed Tails into the hallway. Together they walked through the dimly lit tunnels, which were kept warm by some ventilation system built by the mechanic-minded mutants at the secret rebellion hideout. It had always struck Daman as a rather strange place to live, but he liked it. Living in caves with friends was better than living on the street with no one.
They came to the southernmost exit of the hideaway and slipped through some of the mountainous paths until they came to the little glen they'd been going to for picnics lately. It was secret, serene, and Daman felt relaxed whenever he sat in a patch of green grass and ate a sandwich with his friend. The boy took a seat with a gusty sigh, setting the picnic basket down beside him.

Tails followed Daman through the hallways, constantly looking around. He was glad that they didn't see any others on their journey to their secret hideout. He smiled as soon as they stepped out into wooded area.
He loved their secret place for their picnics. It let him stop being Tails for a little while and let him just be Alex again. Daman was the only one he felt comfortable around. He took a seat across from Daman on the grass, smiling.

"Here you go, Alex," Daman said, handing his friend a tuna salad sandwich. He grabbed the two bottles of root beer and handed one to his friend. Daman loved being close to another person, being able to talk and relax like this. It was a rare gift for a mutant, as Daman had learned during his short, painful life. But in that moment he couldn't think of anything sad. He didn't think about friends he'd lost or the fact that he could never experience relationships the same way as others because of his unpredictable ability. All he could think of was what a wonderful day it was and how happy he was to be sitting next to Tails with a ham sandwich and a root beer. Daman rested back against the turf and smiled slightly.

"Thanks Daman" he said, taking his sandwich and root beer from his friend. He opened the root beer and took a sip, thankful for the peacefulness surrounding them. He took a bite of the sandwich, chewing as he thought about how happy he was now. He was thankful for Daman and the friendship he'd given him.

The two boys ate together in companionable silence. Daman enjoyed the warmth and the sunshine, even if his thick, black clothing was pretty warm. He'd grown quite used to wearing unseasonal clothing. Living in Arizona had been hard for him at first. In Russia wearing layers of clothes was expected, so it had been easy enough to cover his skin there. Here, it was like walking in a sauna all day. But Daman had adapted, and didn't mind so much now. Still, he wished he could sometimes walk around without so much weight on his shoulders. It would be nice to get to feel the wind on his skin, to air out his wings a bit. Daman sighed as he took a bite of sandwich. That would be nice.

Alex finished up his sandwich. He loved his picnics with Daman, they were always so nice and quiet. He sat there thinking of what else they could do today. He wondered if Daman would like to go for a swim today.
"Do you think we could go swimming after?" he asked.

Daman glanced at Tails, his eyebrows rising slightly. He smiled.
"Ah, to the old creek bed, eh? I'm sure the water will be kholodnyy today. Cold, freezing. But it'll feel nice in this heat, huh?" Daman ruffled Tails' hair with his gloved hand. "Sounds like a plan, Alex."
