Daman glanced at the picnic basket and shook his head. The kid really had to get over his self-consciousness. Says the guy who hides his wings most of the time, Daman thought. He swooped down to his perch over the arch and held the basket out, as if to drop it. He looked down to see if Tails was underneath it.

Tails got to his feet and walked under the basket. He held his arms out to catch it and hoped he actually would. He wished he could just leave like Daman wanted him too, but he hated his fur and didn't want anyone else to know about it.

Daman saw Tails and angled the basket so that it would hopefully fall straight into the boy's arms. He let go of it and watched it drop, waiting to see if Tails managed to catch it before he would go and find a better perch again.

Tails caught it and placed it on the ground. He smiled up at Daman. "Thanks" he mouthed. He opened the basket and pulled on his clothes quickly. Then he grabbed the bandage and wrapped his arm up. "Can we go back together?" he asked in his usual quiet tone. He didn't want to face the other mutants alone. They always stared at him or tried to talk to him and he hated it.

Daman looked down when he heard Tails' question.
"Yeah," he called back softly, though the wind probably blocked out his answer. So he just nodded and motioned for Tails to go first. He would follow behind and keep an eye on their retreat. He motioned with a round motion, hoping that Tails understood to take the roundabout way back to the entrance so they'd likely lose anyone trying to track them.

Tails smiled and nodded. He picked up the basket and began heading in the direction opposite of their entrance, intending to loop around through the trees. He hoped they would get back okay.

Daman launched himself into the air, catching the updraft under his wings. He flew around the tops of the canyons, never emerging over them but still staying at a height where he could see if anyone appeared on the edge of the cliffs. He also kept Tails in his sight as well as he could, diving after him when he went into overhanging archways. When they got back to the entrance, after quite the roundabout journey, Daman landed beside Tails and hurried to the door. He typed in the code on a keypad hidden among the rocks, then ushered his friend inside. Then he shut and locked the door behind them.

Tails was relieved when they were finally inside. He was glad no one had seen them afterall. "How was anyone up there?" Tails asked Daman. "I thought we were safe out there" he added.

Daman took a moment to catch his breath--and his thoughts. He had no idea how anyone could have snuck past the psychic wards that guarded the mutant base. It should have been impossible.
"I think I need to report this right away," he said finally, trying to keep his voice from shaking. "It may have been one of ours just patrolling, but we need to be cautious." He tried to reassure himself that it must have been just another mutant. He certainly hoped so.

Tails nodded in agreement, someone needed to know. "I hope it was just someone patrolling" he said. "Do you need me to come with you?" he asked.

"I don't think so," Daman said, glancing back at Tails. "I'll take you back to the room if that would make you feel more comfortable. Or do you want to go to the library?" Those were the spots where Tails usually spent his time, and Daman wanted him to be comfortable before he left him to find Falling Star to report this disturbance.

Tails pondered the question for a moment. He didn't really want to spend the day in his room today, he was excited to have a chance to get out. The library was usually pretty empty, and no one ever bothered him in his little corner.
"The library, I don't feel like being in the room right now" Tails replied.

"All right. I'll drop you off there first, then." Daman curled his wings around his body self-consciously. He was still shirtless, though thanks to the wind during his flight he was no longer damp at all. Even his hair was beginning to dry, curling around his ears and jaw. He glanced at Tails, who had the basket with his clothes in it.
"Mind setting those down here real quick?" he asked, gesturing to a spot beside him. He didn't want to take the risk of having their skin touch if Tails handed the clothes to him directly.

Tails smiled at Daman and put the basket beside him. He knew his friend was worried about touching and hurting anyone. Sometimes he wished that Daman was able to touch him but he wouldn't change his best friend, his family for anything.

Daman grabbed his shirt and slipped it over his head. Then he slipped on his cloak and studiously strapped it in place. He turned to Tails and smiled.
"Okay, all set. Let's go, shall we?"
