Tails smiled as Daman ruffled his hair. He liked when Daman touched him, it was comforting, and he trusted that Daman wouldn't hurt him. "Yeah, its really hot out today" he said.

"Then as soon as we finish eating and resting, it's off to the creek." Daman smiled at his friend and then leaned back, lifting his root beer bottle up in a toast before taking a gulp. A burp escaped the boy's lips and he laughed at the feeling of it bubbling up in his stomach. This was life. The whole mutant thing, living in caves on the run, seemed so distant in that moment. He was just enjoying himself, the boy that he really should have been instead of the man he'd been forced to become.

Tails took a sip of his own root beer, a smile still on his face. His ears twitched as a few birds flew from a tree above them. He leaned back and stared up at the sky, watching the birds fly higher and higher. He wondered what it would be like to fly like that.

Daman watched some birds fly overhead. His shoulders ached as they sometimes did, a sign that his wings were out of use and sore from being bound up all the time. Daman felt them move against his back, the soft plumes brushing his skin under the layers of his clothing. Daman closed his eyes for a moment. He wished sometimes that he could live somewhere else, somewhere happy, where he could fly wherever he liked and never have to be estranged for it. Maybe someday the world would finally realize that mutants were no threat. Maybe someday. But he wouldn't hold his breath.

Tails knew that Daman could fly, he'd seen him do it but not often. He wondered why, if he had wings he was sure he would spend his days in the clouds. He smiled as he imagined soaring high above everything, escaping all the people and mutants. He sighed and wished that he could be somewhere more private and not trapped in caves with so many others.

When he heard him sigh, Daman glanced at Tails. The boy's face looked wistful, and Daman wondered what he was thinking about. Sometimes Daman wondered if he understood his little friend at all. Tails was in a fragile state, and who could blame him? He'd been tortured since he was a little boy. He was still young. Daman just wished he could help him somehow.
"What are you thinking about, bratan?" He asked in a quiet voice.

"I'm just wondering what it'd be like to be with the clouds, away from people" Tails replied. "I hope we can get out of here one day" he added "find somewhere nice and quiet away from everything." The only person he didn't want to escape was Daman, he didn't want to be totally alone, he wanted to be with his family.

Daman looked back up at the sky.
"It would be nice," he said slowly. "But sometimes I wonder what would have happened if there had been no problems. No pain. Where would I be? Who would I be?" Daman sat pondering this for a minute. Then he turned to Tails. "I probably would have never met you, for instance. That would be a sad thing."

Tails turned his head to look at Daman and smiled. "Yeah, I used to spend a lot of time thinking what it would be like if a normal family adopted me and not some crazy scientist. It would've saved me a lot of pain" he said "but then I wouldn't have ended up here with you. And I don't think life would be as fun without you."

Daman smiled slightly.
"Yeah. I guess no one can ever know what would have happened, huh?" He stared up into the sky, framed by red cliffs of towering stone.
"Well," he said suddenly, smirking. "At least I get to live somewhere warm. Russia is the arctic compared to this."

"Nope theres no way to know for sure" he said. "Yeah its always nice and warm here" he said smiling. "It'd be nice to see snow again though" he added, remembering when he used to make snow angels with his dad before everything.

Daman glanced at Tails.
"Snow, huh? I guess it would be. Maybe we could take a vacation to some cold, northern state, hmm? Get away for a while?" He closed his eyes and sighed softly. It would certainly be nice to be away from the sauna for a little while. Perhaps he and Tails could hitch a ride with one of the patrols going out scouting for At Risks. But he figured Tails wouldn't want to go out into the world, where it wasn't very safe and there were even more people than there were at the base.

"That sounds like it would be fun if there wouldn't be so many people" Tails said. He imagined playing in the snow with Daman, doing all the things he used to do with his parents and smiled. He wished they could go and get away but there would be way to many people to deal with. "I can't exactly go out in public even if I wanted to" he added.

"Ah," Daman said, tapping his head with a finger. "But that's where we can outsmart the ordinaries. If we go to some backwoods place, like... Minnesota or South Dakota or something... and you wear a big hat to cover your ears and I strap down my wings... Boom! Problem solved." Daman tucked his arms underneath his head and leaned back. It would be nice to get away, if it was possible. If not, then at least Daman could enjoy spending days like this.

"What about this?" he asked, waving his tail. "Its not exactly simple to hide" he said. He really wanted to get away with Daman though, maybe he would be okay leaving the Order, as long as Daman was there. He knew that he would look out for him.
