Tails follwed him through the tunnels, his eyes shifting nervously. He breathed a sigh of relief when they finally emerged into the clearing. He noticed how the river was slower and shallower and was comforted by the fact that he wouldn't drown.
He looked over to Daman as he heard the glove comment. He shrugged, I've felt worse he thought to himself. He then quickly followed Daman's lead, shucking off his shirt, and slipping off his shoes, but leaving his bandages in place.

Daman lowered himself into the water, smiling at the feel of it lapping at his waist. Turning, he looked expectantly at Tails.
"It's not too deep. But if you need to just kick your legs and move your hands like this." He demonstrated, pretty much sinking to his knees in the cool water so that he could mimic what he'd do in deeper water. Straightening, Daman smiled at Tails.
"Give it a try." He said, gesturing towards the shallow bank.

Tails watched Daman's demonstration intently. "Alright" he said, moving closer to the bank. He slowly slid into the water, shivering slightly. He decided to try what Daman did and only succeeded in splashing water at Daman. "Oops, sorry" he said.

Daman laughed good-naturedly, enjoying the feeling of the water on his face.
"No problem," he chuckled. "Just keep trying and you'll definitely get it." He smiled as he watched Tails, wondering what the boy was thinking of it so far. Daman hadn't much liked his first time, but had grown to like it pretty quickly.

Tails thought swimming was tons of fun. His tail was annoying him though, it kept wrapping itself around his leg, making movement awkward. He decided to try the motion again and managed to splash Daman a little less. "This is awesome" he said, enjoying the water.

Daman smiled at Tails.
"I'm glad you're enjoying yourself." He said. It was nice to sit back and relax for once. Daman let his wings stretch out on either side of his body. They got a bit heavy when they were wet, but it wasn't any problem for Daman since he was used to them. He smiled as he watched them dampen, the feathers' pure white colors dimming to grey.

Tails stopped swimming around and leaned against a rock. He looked over at Daman, who had his wings outstretched and seemed comfortable. "Thank you" he said. For everything he added in his mind.

Daman glanced over at Tails, not really understanding what he was thanking him for. But he figured it would be polite to respond.
"You bet. Just tell me anytime you want to go out. I've got you covered." Daman winked at his friend and gave him a thumbs up. Then he leaned back and began floating a little with the current, enjoying the feeling of the water seeping into his feathers and brushing his shoulder blades.

Tails smiled brightly at Daman's comment. Since Tails had come to the order he hadn't left the order alone, he barely left his room unless Daman was there to take him somewhere. He was thankful for his best friend, Tails thought of him as family, as a brother. He closed his eyes and let himself relax in the water.

Daman looked into the sky and thought of the first time he'd shown Nikki his wings. The little girl had stared at them, wide-eyed - just like every person did. Then a look of wonder had flashed across her face. "Can I touch?" She had asked quietly, and Daman had been too shocked to deny her, if he had had a mind to. She had gently drawn her fingers through the feathers, smiling all the time. "Krasivaya" she had said. Beautiful. The memory was so bittersweet. Daman stood up and brought his wings forward so that they curled around him. He brushed his fingers through them, wishing she were still here with him.

Tails hadn't realized that he'd drifted into a half sleep state. He started slipping from the rocks and felt his head connect with something solid. This caused memories of cramped silver cages to flash through his mind, along with several other terrible things. He thrashed around for a minute, before finally remembering where he was. He looked over at Daman, an embarassed blush on his cheeks. Why can't I have one normal moment, ever? he asked himself.

Daman started forward in shock when he saw Tails slip into the water and start flailing. But the boy seemed to right himself without his friend's help, so Daman dropped his arms and backed away. His heart was stuttering nervously, a telltale sign that he really cared for Tails. It had been a long time since he'd had a friend. The feeling was a bit nostalgic.
"You okay, bratan?" He asked quietly.

Tails took a moment to ponder Daman's question. He knew that he was okay in the physical sense, but he didn't know about his mental state. "Yeah, I mean, I'm not hurt" he said, hoping Daman would catch the hidden meaning. "Sorry for scaring you" he added.

Daman cocked his head slightly, leaning against a jutting boulder.
"You 'mean you're not hurt', huh? Is something else wrong, then? You can talk to me." Daman's eyebrows rose slightly over his black eyes.

Tails was tempted just to tell Daman to forget about it but he knew his friend was concerned. "Just some flashbacks" Tails said "they took me by surprise, is all." He could never tell Daman what the flashbacks contained, or about how exactly he was treated in the lab. He wouldn't let his friend carry that knowledge.
