Daman looked at Tails steadily, wondering what sort of things his friend had gone through, exactly. Sighing, Daman looked up into the patch of sky visible between the canyon walls and overhangs that hid their little swimming place.
"I know what that's like, bratan. Lots of us here do. We've seen death, suffering, hatred, pain... and it haunts us all." He continued to stroke his feathers, looking at them with a thoughtful expression on his face.
"Did I ever tell you I was born in Russia?" He asked, smirking slightly. His accent may not have been as strong as it used to be, but he doubted it had gone unnoticed.

Tails listened as he spoke about experiencing death and pain. I doubt they'd understand the pain of living in a cage and being tortured for hours on end he thought to himself.
"No you haven't' Tails replied. If Daman was willing to share his past, maybe Tails could share some of his.

Daman sighed and ran his hand through his thick brown hair.
"Yeah, it was... a long time ago, I guess. Or maybe not that long ago." He leaned against the rock and crossed his arms over his chest.
"My parents knew I was different, you know?" He shrugged his shoulders so that his wings rose slightly from his sides. "They dropped me off into an orphanage, and that's where I was raised. If you've ever seen Annie, then you'll have an idea of what happened to the Head Mistress's favorites. The rest of us weren't treated so nicely." Daman paused, remembering some of the pains he'd suffered at her hands. He supposed it was poetic justice, what had happened to her. But he still wished he hadn't done it.

Tails listened to him as he spoke. He had no idea what Annie was, but he was familar with the orphange. He knew how badly the orphanage treated kids, but that treatment was nothing compared to the lab. He waited patiently for Daman to continue his story, debating whether or not he should tell his own.

Daman looked down at his feet. He could see them through the crystal clear water, see how they mingled with the smooth rocks of the riverbed that were untainted by scum and algae.
”I guess I shouldn’t complain,” he sighed. ”There are mutants with much less obvious abilities that have been treated worse than I.” He shrugged his shoulders slightly, watching the river flowing. He saw a leaf drifting on the current and picked it out of the water. He stared at it for a moment and then smiled.
”There was a girl there… Nikki. She was my best friend. I would have stayed in that place forever for her.” He said, twirling the leaf around between his fingertips. He felt the weight of his words pressing on his chest. But she left me first. He thought solemnly.

Tails watched as Daman shifted while telling the story. He seemed to be lost in his thoughts as he played with a leaf in his hand. "What happened?" he asked curiously. He guessed that she had gotten adopted, but he supposed it could've been much worse.

Daman felt a deep pain in his heart as he remembered her. Nikki had always worn shabby clothes, but she had looked like a princess when she pulled her hair up in a braid and looked at him with such sparkling blue eyes. She would smile at him, even when she was on the brink of starvation and all he could sneak her was a tiny piece of bread. "Spasibo," she would say. Thank you. How could she thank him, when he could do nothing to help her?
"There was something of an epidemic going around then. She wasn't very strong due to the Head Mistress's treatment. When she got sick, no one called a doctor. Nikki didn't have the strength to fight it alone." Daman said sadly, wishing he could erase the moment from history. His last moment with her. Holding her hand, feeling his emotions churning inside of him as she looked up into his face with bleary, unfocused eyes. "Ya... tebya... lyublyu." She had said. I love you. And with that, Nikki breathed her last. Daman could feel his eyes stinging, and he brushed away the tears quickly, not wanting Tails to see them.
"There's not a single day that passes when I don't remember her and wish I could've done something to save her." He said with a sigh.

Tails felt his fragile heart breaking more at his friend's story. He couldn't imagine losing a close friend like that, afterall Daman is his only friend and he barely remembers his parents. "I'm so sorry" he said sadly. He slowly moved closer to Daman and wrapped his arms around him in a comforting gesture.

Daman flinched when he felt Tails's arms, opening his mouth to tell the boy that it wasn't safe to touch him. But to his surprise, he didn't feel the usual burning sensation that heralded the use of his powers. Looking down at Tails, he felt nothing but the warmth of another person. Hesitated for a moment, Daman slipped off his glove slowly and then set it on Tail's head. He stared in wonder when his powers didn't seem to react.
"That's alright, bratan. The past is the past. I won't forget her, but I have other friends who are important to me now. I have to protect them now." He said, glad that, for once, his powers weren't making it difficult for him to be comforted. It must be the water. He thought. I've never touched someone in the water before...

Tails smiled slightly at the comment. He was still feeling sad for his friends loss even though he had never met the girl. Tails contemplated telling Daman his past, well at least some of it. He didn't want to make Daman worry to much or scare him. "Did you, maybe want to hear about where I came from?" he asked quietly, avoiding eye contact with Daman.

Daman looked down at the little boy and stroked some of Tails's hair back from his forehead.
"If you want to talk about it bratan. But don't feel that you have to." He said, smiling gently. He hadn't touched someone in a long time, and the feeling was as nice as he remembered. Daman wasn't really sure why his powers weren't working - he had to assume it was the water - but he was glad they had.

Tails took comfort from being so close to Daman. He hadn't been close to anyone since his parents passed away. "I want you to know something about how I grew up and how I ended up where I was when you found me" he said. He took a deep breath before beginning his story. "Well I had a pretty normal childhood until I was five and my parents were killed. I spent a small time in an orphanage before a man came and adopted. I was excited until he brought me to my new 'home.'" He shuddered as he thought of all the cages and the one he lived in.

Daman listened intently, his expression calm and open. He understood what it was like to not have parents - of course, his had never loved him. Tails had experienced that love. It must have been precious. And that must have made it horrible to lose them. But then, perhaps he didn't even remember? Daman wondered what sort of 'home' Tails had been taken to. He looked at his friend steadily, wanting him to keep going if he could but to take his time.

Tails calmed his nerves once again, and focused on Daman's calm expression. "Well it wasn't really a home as much as it was a laboratory. I was taken into a room and given a strange needle before I passed out. I woke up in a small cage with my ears and tail" he explained. "The cage wasn't the worst part though, it was the experiments. You see I used to be a human before I was used as my 'father's' first guinea pig. I don't know exactly what he was looking for, all I know is that he was giving children like me mutant DNA. Everyday he would try and force me to use my new powers but I never could and when I tried it was extremely painful." He stopped for a moment, feeling tears falling down his cheeks at the memories of the excruciating pain he went through. He reached his hand up to wipe the tears away, shaking slilghtly.

Daman's brows furrowed slightly. He felt a terrible hatred towards any man that would harm a child like Tails's "father" had hurt him. Wrapping his arms more tightly around the boy's body, he looked into his eyes and tried to smile.
"Bratan..." He said, sighing softly, "You're safe now. You're safe." He said.
